| The Nouveaux Honkies |
Upcoming Events |
From way down South, here come The Nouveaux Honkies. This violin, guitar, bass and drum quartet are Roots and Roll that Rocks. “If Johnny Cash and Freddy King had a baby it would be the Nouveaux Honkies,” said the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. Their 2007 self titled cd won best roots band in Palm Beach County. Their 2008 cd “Where Do I Go” hit #3 on the National Roots Country (Americana) Chart, Roots Music Report and 48 weeks later was still on the charts when their 2009 cd “Live at Sun” was in the top 30 on the National Roots Blues Chart. Blues Revue Magazine linked their sound to the Stones, with hints of Dire Straights, Curtis Mayfield, Hendrix and Howling’ Wolf. Singer/guitarist, Patrick Timothy O’Donnell’s vocal style was said to be “an amalgam of Van Morrison and Willy De Ville.” Add in violinist, Rebecca Dawkins with her crafty lead lines and poppy rhythms and their unique blend of blues, swing and country is described as a reinvention of the musical wheel. The group has been touring since July of 08’. Their live show is an elegant display of frenzied mayhem. Their summer tour of 09’ put the band through the northeast with Elmore magazine naming them their favorite newcomer at The Rhythm and Roots Festival in Rhode Island. 2010 started with work on their upcoming LP entitled "Your Town". Honkies hit the road again in the summer so don't miss the show! |

Big Poppa E Bringing The Blues Back
Written by S. Pajot
December 2, 2009
After a three-decade career providing percussion and other background sounds for iconic artists like Ike and Tina Turner, Bill Withers, and John Prine, Big Poppa E felt a change coming. Thus, in 2000, he switched tracks,
returning to his roots in the blues with the release of his second album, The First Time Out. It was a ten-track disc of original material that mined E's intimate knowledge of Delta, jazz, and gospel traditions. Moreover, it helped establish the 61-year-old guitarist, singer, and mouth harpist as one of South Florida's preeminent bluesmen, setting the standard for a period of constant gigging, recording, and growth. A short time later, in 2003, Big Poppa E founded the Miami-based independent label Black Owl Music, creating a home for work by local and national artists — including Iko Iko, Deblois, and Diablo Dimes — as well as five of his own albums. All the while, E's kept up a nonstop touring schedule, constantly hitting South Florida live-music spots such as Tobacco Road, Dada, and the Downtowner. Every Sunday, he visits Tryst, alongside his E Band, bringing the blues back with an early evening set of deep and gritty tunes.
Blues in the Key of E
Written by Bob Weinberg
December 20, 2009
Alone with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Big Poppa E is a mesmerizing performer. But the Miami-based bluesman can be equally captivating with a full band providing the colors and textures that allow him to explore his jazzier inclinations. Of course, it helps that Poppa possesses deeply soulful vocals and a repertoire that stretches from vintage blues by Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon to soul classics by Bill Withers. And it certainly doesn’t
hurt that his E Band includes blues and jazz stalwarts such as guitarist and keyboardist Darrell Raines, bassist George Caldwell, and saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia. The group stretches out on tunes such as “Hard Times,” “Old Love,” and the quite affecting “Melonares Blues” on its debut recording, Live. |

| Ben Prestage |
Upcoming Events |
Born the grandson of a Mississippi sharecropper, Ben Prestage has been soaked in Blues tradition and Mississippi culture since birth. Growing up in the swamps of south central Florida, Prestage began to mix Mississippi Country Blues with his own brand of Florida Swamp Blues. This muddy- water- meets- black- water stew has led him to perform from California to the Carolinas to the Florida Keys, in large festivals, every kind of bar, and sometimes on downtown sidewalks. Ben Prestage spent some time as a street performer on historic Beale Street, while living in Memphis, TN. He used to share a spot in front of the New Daisy Theatre with modern blues legends Robert Belfour (Fat Possum Records) and Richard Johnston (2001 International Blues Competition winner).
Being a street musician in the “Blues capital of the South” threw Prestage’s music in a new direction. To his show, he added a cigarbox guitar (made by Memphian an one-man-band John Lowe) which has stereo guitar and bass strings that can be played independently, at the same time. Then Ben added a series of four foot pedals that can be manipulated by the heels and toes of both feet to play a drumkit. The final result is Ben playing guitar, bass, and drums while singing his own brand of Blues which leaves bottles empty and dance floors full wherever his music takes him. |

| Shackdaddys |
Upcoming Events |
This soulful band from South Florida plays an exotic mix of blues, funk and island grooves that could have only been bred in the beach huts and tiki bars of their peninsular homeland. A great live act with years of experience, Shack Daddys have "barbandismo" to spare, but perform and record with a level of taste and originality that separates them from your average eclectic roots outfit. Their self-titled CD perfectly captures the group's shack music aesthetic. Thick with swamp beats and rusty twang, the 12 songs on Shack Daddys range from deep funk to soul ballad, from hardcore reggae to surfadelic rave-up. Languid horns drape swinging keyboards, raw percussion percolates, and the whole thing sounds as rich as a river bottom!
The main Daddys are Bonefish Johnny and Kilmo. Working together for the last 15 years with a rotating line-up of the region's best players (see below), they have entertained countless audiences at clubs, concerts and festivals around the nation. Shack Daddys have provided back-up for such artists as Native American singer/songwriter Chief Jim Billie (when he was Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, a gig that got Shack Daddys mentioned in the bestselling book The Orchid Thief), Clarence Clemmons of Bruce Sprinsteen's E Street Band and New Orleans legend Luther Kent. Shack Daddys have also been seen and heard on the Food Network, providing tracks and performances for Food Nation with Bobby Flay and BBQ with Bobby Flay. |

| Jeff Prine Group |
Upcoming Events |
Jeffrey Prine (no relation to John Prine) was born in 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. He is one of nine children. Jeff’s father was an orchestra leader during the 1940’s through to the 1970’s. As a result, the Prine household was very musical. In addition to Jeffrey, two of his brothers became musicians. His elder brother, Glenn, started playing guitar in the early 1960’s. He introduced Jeff to the guitar. It was apparent that Jeff had an aptitude for playing. The music scene of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s provided a plethora of guitarists. During this period, Jeff and his brothers saw many of these talented musicians.
They frequented the Fillmore East and the Action House on numerous occasions. In 1971, Jeff was awestruck when he saw Peter Green play with Fleetwood Mac. Jeff accounts this experience as the most inspirational and influential of his music development. In addition to the inspiring guitar skills of Peter Green, a sunburst Les Paul became the coveted instrument, which he later acquired.
Jeff founded his own band and played the local New York scene for two decades, which included venues such as My Father’s Place, Great Gildersleeves, and Traxx. He did his first four song demo with Roulette Records in December of 1979. Throughout this time he shared the stage with artists such as Dickie Betts, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, The Outlaws, Cyndi Lauper and Stuff, featuring Steve Gadd.
Jeff moved to Florida in 1988 and wasted no time rapidly immersing himself in the South Florida music scene. He submitted a demo to the Riverwalk Blues Festival committee and was asked to perform at the festival that year. Eventually Jeff was asked to put a band together to back up Big Mama Blue at Cheers in Fort Lauderdale. Throughout his two years at Cheers, Jeff played with Albert Collins, Coco Montoya, Buddy Miles, Kim Simmonds, Dave Mason, Rick Derringer and Steve Morse. At this time, Jeff’s band recorded a T.V. pilot called The Rock and Blues.
Jeff worked hard to establish himself in the South Florida music scene. He formed the Jeff Prine Trio featuring Bobby Freeman on Hammond B3 and Jack Ciano on drums. This trio toured many of South Florida’s finest clubs and featured some of South Florida’s most popular vocalists. A highlight for the Jeff Prine Group, in 1992, was recording a live CD at Tobacco Road in Miami. The release of this CD was followed by a mini tour of several New York venues which included the historic Birdland, the Lone Star Café, and La Bar Bat .
A second CD was released in 2002 featuring the vocalist Juanita Dixon. Consequently the band was in demand at many Florida venues such as the House of Blues in Orlando and Jazziz at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood , The Riverwalk Blues Festival, and headlined the Quincy Blues and Barbecue Festival. Local radio hosts Len Pace (WLRN) and Dar (WKPX) have featured much of The Jeff Prine Band’s music.
Jeff’s third CD Currents is an EP featuring five original compositions and two covers. They are truly an epic display of his playing, singing and songwriting skills, accompanied by a Hammond B3, piano, bass and drums.

|
| David Shelley |
Upcoming Events |
Powerful blues rock guitar. Soulful testifying vocals. Heartfelt original songwriting. Passionate percussion with a hard grooving band. These elements make up the music of David Shelley. Fusing traditional forms with unique cultural experiences, David Shelley is a roots rocker with a worldbeat edge, a bluesman for the planet Earth. He played percussion with jazz fusion artist Randy Bernsen and was guitarist, singer and songwriter with reggae band T'shan.. T'shan was wildly popular in local clubs and David took the sound even further with his own band, opening for everyone from The Clash and The Kinks to reggae star Dennis Brown, rocking the house with an ecclectic mix of worldbeat and blues roots. When some of his recordings were chosen for a movie soundtrack, Shelley was cast to play a rock musician in Roger Vadim's remake of "And God Created Women" starring Rebecca DeMornay. This bit of work lead to a role in music videos for Cher's "Heart Of Stone" album, including the famous aircraft carrier scene of "If I Could Turn Back Time." The pop diva was no stranger to blues rock talent and drafted the guitarist to play in her touring band. Thus David performed at the 1989 American Music Awards and the 1990 and 1991 MTV Music Awards, toured the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland and the UK, and was seen by millions on cable channels like VH1. His music has been played on the CBS soap "The Guiding Light", ABC soap "General Hospital", "Touched By An Angel", and "Promised Land". Soon after he found himself as series regular and guitarist for "The Ron Reagan Show"on Fox. He then moved to the desert in an effort to reconnect with his musical roots. Roaming the West, he hooked up with some Native American musicians in Santa Fe. Featuring members of the Apache and Zuni tribes, The Mud Ponies (sometimes called Seventh Son) played hard rocking Indian-flavored blues throughout the Southwest. David also had a LA based band called Blues Farm where renown blues star Coco Montoya frequently played with the band encouraging David to pursue his dreams of being a blues artist. He is often invited to play with Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes' band Gov't Mule and has shared the stage with Allman Brothers alumnus Dan Toler and blues artists like Anson Funderburg, Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Tommy Castro, Larry McCray and many more. David performs annually at the Fort Lauderdale Blues Festival, one of the largest such events in the country, and in 2007 represented the South Florida Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, where The David Shelley Band competed with almost 160 bands from around the world and proudly made it to the top 10 finalists. David has worked in the Native American community for many years performing on the bill with John Trudell, Floyd Redcrow Westerman, and the late Jessie Ed Davis. He co-wrote and co-produced for Native American vocalists Paula Bowers and Grammy Award winner Star Nayea. He also performs in Native American singer/songwriter and Seminole Tribal Chairman Chief Jim Billie's backup
band.
A recent trip to Nashville in 2009 reinvigorated David's songwriting and 2010 finds him hard at work on writing, performing and recording new songs for a fresh CD to be released this year. David Shelley has been to a crossroads called Earth, where glitz and grime meet on the boulevard between swamp and desert, creating jamming blues rock music that is ancient and modern and truly original. |

interpretations of early American blues and folk songs dating from the
mid 1800's through the 1940's. Though most of their music is pre WWII,

common of things and makes it different .

| Albert Castiglia |
Upcoming Events |
| Albert Castiglia (pronounced “ka-STEEL-ya) was born on August 12, 1969 in New York. At the age of 5, his family moved to Miami.
Castiglia has a blues history. In 1990, he joined The Miami Blues Authority and later on won "Best Blues Guitarist"; from New Times magazine in 1997. The legendary Junior Wells discovered Castiglia and immediately hired him as his own guitarist/vocalist on several world tours. After Wells' passing, Castiglia toured with Atlanta blues singer Sandra Hall, then ventured out on a solo career and released his debut album in 2002, Burn, working with his longtime friend, Graham Wood Drout of Iko-Iko. In 2006, he released his second album (and first for Blues Leaf Records), A Stone's Throw, which included two more insightful Drout songs,“Big Toe" and “Ghosts Of Mississippi".
Now Castiglia comes back full-bore with a blistering new album on Blues Leaf Records, These are the Days, which perfectly showcases both his incendiary electric and slide guitar work and soulful vocals, which recall Van Morrison.
These are the Days contains five Castiglia originals, including a tribute to his mentor Junior Wells, "Godfather of the Blues". Once again, Graham Wood Drout contributes another outstanding song, “Celebration", to add to the string of compositions he's written on each of Castiglia's albums. Until now, “Somebody Loan Me a Dime" and Little Willie John's“Need Your Love So Bad" were attention grabbers in Castiglia's live shows; but through the insistence of Blues Leaf president Joe Morabia, Albert captures that magic on this album.
This is the album that says “These Are Albert Castiglia's Days".

| Famous Frank Ward and The Nucklebusters |
Upcoming Events |
| Over the course of its 13-year run on the South Florida club circuit, the Nucklebusters Blues Band has served as the house band at a number of reputable local venues, including the legendary Musician's Exchange in Fort Lauderdale.
Having suffered innumerable lineup changes over the years, the Nucklebusters are still riding high in the saddle with a current roster consisting of mainstay vocalist and lead guitarist "Famous" Frank Ward, vocalist-bassist Sheldon Voss, vocalist- harmonica player Jason Ricci, drummer Tim Kuchta, and organist Joe Saint.
The band's specialty is raucous, Chicago-style blues, and after all their years of nonstop gigging, Famous Frank and the boys pretty much have their act down cold. With a vast repertoire of tunes, including everything from original roadhouse boogie and smoldering instrumentals to swingin' covers of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good," it's not surprising that when locals want their blues kicks, they go looking for Nucklebusters. |

|
| Famous Frank Ward |
Upcoming Events |
| Frank Ward, guitarist, vocalist, and the fearless leader of the Nucklebusters, is a naturally shy and retiring person (for proof, check out the history of the band in his own words), but he did agree to answer a few questions for the enlightenment of Nuckleheads everywhere.
If you could jam with any person, live or dead, who would you choose? Why? Muddy Waters; he's the ultimate bandleader.
What was your most embarrassing on-stage moment?
I blew a guitar amp fuse at the Riverwalk Blues Fest in front of 5000 people. Johnny Charles plugs me into his amp, gets a fuse, and saves the day.
What's in your tape/cd player right now?
Spin Doctors, Robben Ford, Ronnie Earl, Eddy Clearwater and Luther Tucker.
What artist or band would you say was the most influential in your development as a musician?
Ronnie Earl. He combined the best guitarists to make his style (Luther Tucker, T-Bone Walker, Freddy King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, etc).
What non-musical talents would most people be surprised to discover you have?
I'm the owner of A.M.F. Tire Inc (in Boca Raton). I'm one of the few people in the world who does on the car balancing with no equipment assistance. I'm pretty good at BBQ, steak and ribs especially. I'm also a good golfer.

Because of his broadcasting influences, Bill introduces songs like he's on the air, and occasionally performs his famous "Big Riff" radio contest on stage.
Sharing the spotlight, on the lead guitar, is Rick Friedlander. Rick is exceptional in his ability to faithfully recreate performances of some of the world's greatest guitar players. Rick will literally take you on a tour of the classic riffs as they were recorded by the original artists.
The band's musical foundation, "the rhythm section" consists of Mark Knight on bass guitar and Nat "DrumMan" Barouch bangin' the skins. When combined with Rick, this versatile lineup completes the "Power Trio" configuration, which produces a sound that has become synonymous with classic rock. Mark's deep low-end bass makes you want to get out of your seat and move your feet. His melodic bass lines are timeless to South Florida fans, and his style has made him famous on the local music scene. Top it all off with 3 and 4 part harmony and you've got yourself a band with a strong vocal signature that is hard to forget.

Upcoming Events |
In the town that I lived in, there was a barbershop,â€Â
Gilmore reminisces. “And the barber that owned the shop was a sanctified preacher. He
was a minister, and he had this little flat-bodied guitar. It was electric, no amplifier to it. And
he would bring it to the shop with him, and he was trying to learn how to play. So, I would get
to the barbershop early whenever I would go to get my hair cut, or even after school, I would
hang around at the barbershop, because I wanted to get my hands on that guitar. I would take
the guitar and they had these old wooden benches. I would lay the guitar on top of the wooden
bench and when you would strum the strings, the wood, the bench, would vibrate, and the floor
would, the sound would resonate, and you could hear it without the amplifier. I learned just from
watching him.†Young Gilmore tried to keep his obsession with the instrument from his church
going aunt, who was raising him, but word of the talented boy who played at the barbershop
eventually got back to her. She finally heard him play with his group at church and was moved to tears.
“She went straight to Sears and Roebuck and bought me a brand-new guitar,†Gilmore says. “It was
a Kay, I think. And from that, we started learning other songs, other music besides church music. And
that didn’t sit too well with her. But when she finally accepted that we could make money, that we could
make a lot on a weekend, though we weren’t old enough to be in the bars without parental supervision,
she would go with us. And would sit at the door and take up the money for us.â€Â
Joey Gilmore's career has spanned 40 years with performances throughout the United States and
Europe. He has called South Florida home for the past twenty years. Joey is a true Blues and R & B
master who incorporates new and varied styles in his music performing original compositions mixed
with traditional standards in his high energy live show. His tenor/baritone vocals belt out tunes with a
loss abandon reminiscent of Blues Legends from the 1940's and 1950's. This Blues man's major
influences are apparent without sacrificing his unique style. Artists Joey has shared the stage with
include; James Brown, Etta James, Bobby Bland, Little Milton, Johnny Taylor and numerous others |
